Full day on the ground

Full coastal day: Hell’s Gates + Alexandria link

Best for: Fit walkers with solid water discipline

Longer Coastal Walk day that can include Alexandria Bay or a Sunshine Beach one-way — only when the group has already proven they can handle heat and distance.

Alexandria Bay coastline, Noosa National Park, Queensland

Alexandria Bay

This is not the first-visit default. It assumes you want a longer coastal line than the classic Hell’s Gates return, with honest logistics for water, sun and exit.

One-way walks need a pre-arranged pickup or two cars. Out-and-back doubles the work — plan food and pace for the least fit person still going forward. Pride is a terrible compass after kilometre four in subtropical heat.

Verify track status on QPWS the morning you leave. Cancel or shorten if heatwave or severe weather is forecast. A half-day Hell’s Gates return is still a complete Noosa National Park day.

Day use appears free on official materials — [VERIFY] live fees. Camping is not permitted inside the park. Southern parking is limited; residential streets are not overflow lots. Treat logistics as part of the walk, not optional admin.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Queensland Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Lock the logistics product

Decide: out-and-back from Park Road, or one-way to Sunshine Beach with pickup. Confirm who carries extra water and electrolytes. Screenshot alerts and maps. Charge phones. No late-night “we’ll figure it out on the track.” Sleep early.

  2. 0:00–0:30

    Park Road before peak

Early arrival for parking and cooler air. Full bottles, sun shirts on, hard turnaround time agreed out loud. If the lot is full, walk in — do not burn 45 minutes circling. Final Park Alerts check if you still have signal.

  3. 0:30–1:45

    Coastal Walk through mid headland

Steady pace past Boiling Pot, Tea Tree and Granite. Beach pauses are optional and condition-dependent. Keep moving with water discipline — this day punishes long unplanned swims early if heat is rising.

  4. 1:45–2:15

    Hell’s Gates checkpoint

Photo stop, not a 40-minute platform party. Re-check water margin and moods. Continue only if everyone still has capacity. Automatic reverse: dizziness, empty bottles, heat distress, or a child who has stopped drinking.

  5. 2:15–3:45

    Alexandria Bay / southern link

Use formed track only. Beach time at Alexandria is optional and ocean-condition dependent — swimming is never guaranteed safe. If heat spikes, reverse early. Stay respectful of other users and current park rules at the bay.

  6. 3:45–4:30

    Exit toward planned endpoint

Exit at planned southern access or begin the return north with honest daylight math. One-way groups: confirm pickup is live before you commit the last kilometres. Do not invent rideshare optimism at a quiet exit.

  7. 4:30+

    Recovery (no bonus epics)

Food, shade, rehydration in Sunshine Beach or Noosa Heads. No bonus “quick Laguna Lookout” or Emu Mountain if people are cooked. Note what you would change next time: more water, earlier start, or shuttle logistics.

Packing

  • Water 2 L+ per person
  • Electrolytes / salty snacks
  • Sun shirt + hat
  • SPF50 + sunglasses
  • Grip trail shoes
  • First-aid + blister kit
  • Phone power bank
  • Cash/card for café recovery

Product searches: gear hub.

Parking & access tips

  • One-way: pre-place a car or book pickup — do not assume rideshare at exits.
  • Southern parking is limited; respect residential streets.
  • Start earlier than a half-day plan.
  • Never leave bags visible at either end.
  • [VERIFY] time limits and signs at Park Road and southern access on the day.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Emu Mountain
  • Long café crawl mid-walk
  • Any off-track “secret beach” detour
  • Laguna Lookout sunset after a cooked full link
  • Out-and-back if the group already looks marginal at Hell’s Gates — reverse instead

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who have already done shorter headland sections happily
  • Groups with solid water discipline and a locked exit plan
  • Multi-day visitors putting the long coastal product on day two
  • People willing to reverse early without treating it as failure

Decision gates

  • If heatwave is forecast: switch to half-day Hell’s Gates only
  • If water is under half at Hell’s Gates with more than half the day ahead: reverse or take the shortest safe exit
  • If pickup fails: do not invent a night walk — use daylight, phone, and conservative reverse options
  • If anyone is heat-stressed: beach time is cancelled; exit is the product

What success looks like

  • Known exit completed in daylight with the whole group intact
  • Enough water left that nobody finished on empty
  • No second epic stacked after recovery
  • Honest notes for whether one-way or out-and-back worked for your group
