Alexandria Bay & Sunshine Beach link
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, parking rules, facilities and wildlife re…
Extending the Coastal Walk story past the classic Hell’s Gates turnaround toward Alexandria Bay and Sunshine Beach access. More time, more sun, more need for a clear exit and water plan.
Do not pair: Do not add Emu Mountain and Laguna sunset onto this long coastal product the same day. One long coastal commitment per day for most groups.
Turnaround: Hell’s Gates is a photo stop, not a 40-minute party — continue only with water margin. Automatic reverse on heat distress, empty bottles, or fading daylight. Confirm signed distances (Alexandria Bay N ~3.3 km / S ~4.4 km; Sunshine Beach ~5.4 km one way — QPWS planning figures) on site.
- Promising the full Alexandria / Sunshine link when half the group only packed for a Hell’s Gates selfie loop.
- No pre-arranged pickup on a one-way plan, then rideshare fantasy at a quiet southern exit with patchy signal.
- Coastal link beyond classic Hell’s Gates turnaround (VERIFY)
- 2–5+ hours depending on start point and fitness
- Longer than Hell’s Gates-only return — full headland–Sunshine Beach links commonly multi-km one way (VERIFY)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Fit day walkers, one-way car shuttles, quieter beach endpoints, extended coastal days
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.qld.gov.au/parks/noosa and Park Alerts before you go.
Official QPWS info (verify status)
Alexandria Bay link — Alexandria Bay
Where you start
Park Road day-use (north) or Sunshine Beach / Parkedge approaches (south)
Can be walked as an out-and-back from either end or as a one-way with a car shuttle. Confirm current track status and access points on QPWS pages.
How to get there
- Northern start: Park Road day-use as for the main Coastal Walk.
- Southern start: Sunshine Beach / Parkedge Road area — limited parking; respect residential access rules.
- One-way walks need a pre-arranged pickup or two cars — do not assume rideshare is reliable at remote exits.
- Peak congestion at either end still applies — start early and have a Plan B.
How to do it (step by step)
- Only attempt the full link if the group has already done shorter headland sections happily. This is not the first-visit default.
- Pack more water than the Hell’s Gates-only plan. Agree a hard turnaround if anyone is heat-stressed.
- Alexandria Bay has its own character and conditions — swimming is never guaranteed safe; read the ocean, not Instagram.
- Finish with enough daylight; walk in daylight hours only.
- Verify live track status, distances and any closures on parks.qld.gov.au the morning you leave.
What to expect
This is the Coastal Walk’s “long day” product. You trade the simple Hell’s Gates selfie loop for more coastline, more decision points, and more chance someone in the group runs out of water.
Success looks like a known exit, full bottles, and a café recovery — not inventing a beach party at the furthest point with empty packs.
Distances and times are highly start-point dependent. QPWS planning figures commonly cite Alexandria Bay N ~3.3 km / S ~4.4 km and Sunshine Beach ~5.4 km one way from main day-use, with full Coastal Walk ~10.8 km return Class 4 — [VERIFY] live for your route and date.
How to do it well
Lock logistics the night before: out-and-back from Park Road, or one-way to Sunshine Beach with pickup. No late-night “we’ll figure it out on the track.”
Hell’s Gates is a photo stop on this product, not a 40-minute platform party. Continue only if everyone still has water margin and good humour. Automatic reverse: heat distress, empty bottles, or fading daylight.
Stay on formed track. Unfenced cliffs and wave-washed platforms are not shortcuts. Public materials about Alexandria Bay character (including clothing-optional notes in some sources) require respectful behaviour and current park rules — [VERIFY] official wording.
Best conditions
Cooler months, early starts and midweek days improve odds. Summer school holidays raise heat, crowd and parking pressure at both ends.
Cancel or shorten if heatwave or severe weather is forecast. A half-day Hell’s Gates return is still a real Noosa National Park day.
Big swell increases risk on any rock platform curiosity. Keep the product on formed lookouts and track.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: early start + Sunshine Beach café recovery; multi-day trips with classic Hell’s Gates on day one and this longer link on day two.
Weak pairs: this link plus Emu Mountain plus Laguna Lookout sunset plus a long café crawl. One long coastal product per day for most groups.
Camping is not permitted inside Noosa National Park. Day use appears free — [VERIFY] live fee status. Southern parking is limited — respect residents and signs.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure one: mismatched expectations — half the group packed for Hell’s Gates only. Failure two: one-way without a locked pickup, then signal and rideshare hope at the southern exit.
Turnaround at Tea Tree or Hell’s Gates still counts as a park day. Official vs sign: use parks.qld.gov.au figures as planning, then trust signed track info on the day. Not walked — planning from official QPWS sources.
Coastal walking kit (sun, water, grip shoes, heat strategy) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Parking and Plan B: plan your visit · Park Road full Plan B.

Extra tips
- Weekdays and shoulder seasons feel more spacious than summer school holidays.
- One-way north-to-south with a Sunshine Beach recovery works well when logistics are solid.
- Clothing-optional reputation at Alexandria Bay is sometimes mentioned in public material — stay respectful and follow current park rules.
- Electrolytes and salty snacks help on long hot coastal days.
- Pre-arrange pickup before you lose phone signal on the headland.
- Grip shoes and sun shirts — not thongs and bare shoulders for a multi-hour link.
Often paired with Coastal Walk— only if energy and weather allow.
