Alexandria Bay & Sunshine Beach side
Southern headland coast: Alexandria Bay, longer Coastal Walk links, and Sunshine Beach / Parkedge access — quieter endpoints when logistics allow, more sun and distance than the classic Hell’s Gates turnaround.
- Best for: Fit walkers, one-way coastal links, beach endpoints, visitors wanting space from day-use crowds
- Time: Half to full day depending on start point and whether you walk one-way
- Southern approaches via Sunshine Beach / Parkedge Road; or walk the coastal link from Park Road day-use (longer day). Not a casual 10-minute add-on after a late Hastings Street breakfast.

Alexandria Bay & Sunshine Beach side — Alexandria Bay
Why extend past Hell’s Gates
The classic turnaround at Hell’s Gates is enough for most first visits. The Alexandria / Sunshine link is for groups who already know they walk well in heat and want a longer coastal line rather than another café stop.
One-way walks with a car shuttle or pickup at Sunshine Beach are the honest logistics product. Out-and-back doubles the distance — plan food and water accordingly.
If this is your first time on the headland, master the Park Road to Hell’s Gates return first. Stacking a full southern link onto a first-visit learning curve is how empty bottles and arguments appear before the furthest bay.
Alexandria Bay character
Alexandria Bay has a different feel from Tea Tree’s busy mid-walk pause — more open, more “you earned this,” and still fully subject to ocean power. Public material sometimes notes clothing-optional use; stay respectful and follow current park rules.
If anyone is heat-stressed before the bay, turn around. The beach will still be there on a cooler morning. Success is arriving with water margin and a known exit — not inventing a beach party with empty packs.
Swimming is a separate decision from “we made it to the sand.” Read the ocean on the day, be honest about rips and swell, and treat “look only” as a successful visit when conditions are wrong.
Sunshine Beach as exit and base
Sunshine Beach / Parkedge approaches give a southern door into the longer coastal story. Parking is limited; residential streets are not overflow lots. Have a turnaround plan if the trailhead is full.
As a recovery end for a one-way walk, Sunshine Beach works well: cafés, town toilets and a psychological “we finished” marker. Pre-arrange pickup — do not assume rideshare is reliable at every exit at every hour.
Staying overnight at Sunshine Beach can make southern starts kinder than fighting Park Road peak from a pure Hastings Street base — still verify live parking and track status on the day.
Fitness, heat and product honesty
This section rewards people who already handle subtropical coastal walking. It punishes groups who treat multi-kilometre headland links like a flat boardwalk promenade in thongs.
Carry more water than the Hell’s Gates-only plan. Agree a hard clock-time turnaround. Automatic reverse signals: dizziness, heat distress, empty bottles, or a child who has stopped drinking.
Day use still appears free on official materials — [VERIFY] live fee status. That does not mean empty tracks or free-for-all parking. Respect signs, residents and formed track only.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: early northern start + Sunshine Beach recovery; or southern start + shorter out-and-back when parking north is hopeless; café and rehydration after, not mid-track “just one more bay.”
Weak pairs: full Alexandria link plus Emu Mountain plus Laguna Lookout sunset plus a river cruise the same calendar day. That is dashboard tourism. Pick one long coastal product and protect recovery.
For multi-day trips, put the classic Hell’s Gates half-day on day one and the longer link on day two when legs and heat strategy are proven.

Practical tips
- Pre-arrange pickup for one-way walks before you leave Wi-Fi.
- Start earlier than the Hell’s Gates-only plan — more distance, more sun.
- Carry 2 L+ water per person on hot days as a planning baseline (adjust to your group).
- Screenshot official maps and Park Alerts; coverage can be patchy on the headland.
- Wear grip shoes and sun-smart clothing — exposed coastal sections bake.
- If heatwave or severe weather is forecast, shorten or cancel — pride is a terrible compass.

FAQ — Alexandria & Sunshine
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Alexandria Bay good for swimming?
Conditions vary and there is no standing safety guarantee. Read the ocean on the day, be honest about rips and swell, and treat “look only” as a successful visit when conditions are wrong.
Can beginners do the full link?
Fit beginners with coastal walking experience can manage shorter segments first. New walkers should master the Park Road to Hell’s Gates return before committing to Alexandria or Sunshine one-ways.
Should I walk one-way or out-and-back?
One-way with a pre-arranged pickup or two-car shuttle is often kinder on heat and motivation. Out-and-back doubles distance and sun exposure — only choose it if water, fitness and daylight all have clear margin.
Is parking free at Sunshine Beach access?
Parking rules, time limits and availability change. [VERIFY] signs and Noosa Council / local rules on the day. Limited spaces and residential streets mean you may need a Plan B exit or a different start time.
Can I camp at Alexandria Bay?
No. Camping is not permitted inside Noosa National Park. Use commercial stays in Sunshine Beach, Noosa Heads or other gateway towns outside the park boundary.
