Things to do at Noosa National Park

Most first visits revolve around the Coastal Walk and Hell’s Gates, with optional Palm Grove shade or Laguna Lookout as Plan B. Southern Emu Mountain is a separate half-day product — not a casual Park Road add-on. Longer Alexandria / Sunshine links are a different sport — only with water, fitness and an exit plan. Do not try to collect every bay on a first visit. Always confirm track status on the official park page.

Day one rule

Pick one primary experience (usually Coastal Walk toward Hell’s Gates). Do not collect Alexandria Bay, Emu Mountain and three lookouts on a first late start.

Weather / energy bail-out

Palm Grove shade, Laguna Lookout or town reset beat forced cliff edges in heat, storms or hangry kids. Bail-outs are competence.

Long-walk filter

Alexandria / Sunshine links need water, fitness and an exit plan. Not an impulse add-on after a café crawl.

  1. 1

    Coastal Walk & Hell’s Gates

Signature walk · moderate · peak weekends busy

The classic first-visit product from Park Road day-use: sealed early sections, Tea Tree Bay, then formed track to Hell’s Gates. Unfenced cliffs, heat and peak parking are real — arrive early and agree a turnaround.

  2. 2

Tea Tree Bay, Granite Bay & beaches

Beaches · variable conditions · photography

Bay pauses along the Coastal Walk — swim only when conditions look right. No standing safety guarantee at any bay. Treat “look only” as success on wrong-ocean days.

  3. 3

    Palm Grove & interior walks

    Shade · easy–moderate · families

Short rainforest and woodland contrast to open cliff walking — shade, birds and a calmer pace. Good Plan B when wind or heat make the coastal edge less fun.

  4. 4

    Laguna Lookout

Minutes · easy · sunset popular

Short elevated views over Laguna Bay with separate parking via Viewland Drive. Ideal sunrise/sunset and low-mobility orientation — not a substitute for Hell’s Gates ground-level drama.

  5. 5

    Wildlife & koala viewing

Wildlife · respect first · quiet groups

Koalas and birds are a highlight when present. Keep distance, never feed wildlife, stay on formed tracks. Sightings are a bonus, not a guarantee — etiquette matters in an urban-edged sanctuary.

  6. 6

    Emu Mountain (southern section)

    Family · southern · half-day product

Gentle family-friendly summit near Peregian — different logistics from Park Road. Best from southern stays; do not stack with a full Hell’s Gates day unless energy and time are genuine.

  7. 7

    Seasonal whale watching from lookouts

Seasonal · lookouts · not guaranteed

Humpbacks migrate along the coast roughly June–November. Land-based watching from headland lookouts is popular when whales are present — treat sightings as a bonus. Boat tours are separate commercial products.

  8. 8

    Gateway towns & stays

    Bases · services · no in-park camping

Noosa Heads (closest to Coastal Walk), Noosaville, Sunshine Beach, Peregian and Coolum. Camping is not permitted inside the national park — commercial stays only outside the boundary.
